A native of Louisiana, Kristen McCarty grew up boating and fishing and still loves both. To some degree, that explains why she and her husband, Patrick, an anesthesiologist, have owned three Nor-Tech 392 SuperFish center consoles—the most recent powered by quad Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines and ordered through Bent Marine, a Nor-Tech dealer in Metairie, La.—in one year.
For the McCarty family, Nor-Tech’s 392 SuperFish offers the best of the angling and recreational boating worlds.
They took delivery of their newest 39-footer earlier this month. Their first 392 was powered by triple 350-hp Yamaha outboards. Their second was set up with quad Mercury Marine Verado 350s. And they have enjoyed center console as well as the power progression.
“I was raised on boats,” said Kristen McCarty. “My husband was not, but we both love our Nor-Techs.
“The 450s are peppy,” she added.
The McCartys, who live in New Orleans, have four children ranging in age from five to 18 years old so they need all the space can get for their weekend days on Lake Pontchartrain. Their new 392 has plenty, according to Kristen, and last weekend her husband ran it in the Florida Powerboat Club Orange Beach Powerboat Week Poker Run.
For family outings, they generally stick to the lake and occasionally venture out into the Gulf of Mexico for nearshore fishing. But when it comes to serious angling for tuna and more, they’ll run 90-plus miles offshore if that’s where the fish are biting.
“I don’t like to put it back on the trailer with gas in it,” Kristen said, then laughed. “But the kids don’t go on 13-hour runs offshore with us.
“We probably put more running time on our engines during fishing trips,” she added. “But we put more hours on the boat just having fun at the lake. It’s not just a capable fishing boat, it’s freaking fun just to be on.”
In addition to four children, the McCartys have plenty of friends who like to join them on boating adventures.
