The team’s support vehicle and its truck, trailer and boat all were unloaded, cleared through customs and loaded onto the night’s last ferry to the Spanish island of Ibiza to make it in time for the Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 Word Championship Mediterranean Grand Prix, which features testing and racing this Friday through Sunday (Sept. 5-7).
“The crew at Peters & May went well above and beyond for us,” said Tim Gallagher, MTI’s sales and marketing manager. “They had staff at the loading and at the unloading to make sure everything went well. They also handled the customs clearance without any issues. They truly are pros at the shipping business.”
By the looks of the offshore racing team’s support rig, Team Abu Dhabi means business this year.
Gallagher said MTI’s Randy Scism, Wade Hausman and John Sprohn are all en route to Spain to work alongside the Team Abu Dhabi crew for the boat’s first race. The team will have its work cut out for it as defending and six-time Class 1 world champion Arif Al Zaffain reignites his formidable partnership with Nadir Bin Hendi and looks to continue the Dubai-based Victory Team’s seven-year championship winning streak and earn its 14th crown.
In other Class 1 news, for the first time in more than two decades catamarans and monohulls will race alongside each other in the Class 1 and V1 world powerboat championships, with an anticipated 14 boats lining up as the revised new-look championships format debuts in Ibiza and Class 1 returns to Spanish waters for the first time since 2006.
