Stephen Miles to Paint First 34-Foot Pilini Marine Technologies Cat

Adding another performance-boat builder to its growing client roster, Stephen Miles Design in Owensboro, Ky., will paint the first 34-foot catamaran for Pilini Marine Technologies. That’s the word from ace paint man Stephen Miles and Jay Pilini of the Clearwater, Fla., boat company that bears his name.

Stephen Miles Design is scheduled to complete its plant expansion just in time to take on work from Pilini Marine Technologies.

“I’ve saw the deck plug and hull together so I know what the boat looks like,” said Miles. “I’m really excited about it—I’m going to put a style of paint on it that to my knowledge has never been done.”

Pilini said he plans to have the first boat delivered to Miles in April.

“We have quite a few boats sold,” said Pilini. “I have a customer in Key West who is friends with Steve, and he painted his Pilini 24-foot center console. Steve came by our shop and saw the new boat, got fired about it and we kind of went from there. We’re trying to come up with a whole different scheme for the paint to set us apart from everybody else.”

Pilini Marine Technologies plans to deliver its first 34-foot catamaran to the painter in April.

If current plans hold, Miles and his crew will paint the first three 34-footers from Pilini. The timing, said Miles, is ideal as he’s expanding his company’s current 4,500-square-foot facility to 9,000 square feet. That will give business the ability to simultaneously run prep (sanding, masking, etc.) and paint crews (laying out graphics, airbrushing, clear coating, etc.).

“We couldn’t take on a new client tomorrow, but one or two months down the road when our expansion is finished we can,” said Miles. “We’ll be able to hire more people and we’ll be a lot more streamlined. I think we’ll be able to get 60 to 70 percent more work done in the same amount of time after the expansion is finished.”
