Stephen Miles Design Tackling First New Fountain Paintjob

Several years back, Stephen Miles painted a 1999 model-year 42-foot Fountain Powerboats sportboat for his longtime friend and fellow Kuttawa Cannonball Run organizer Jeff Hoefling. Since then, the Owensboro, Ky., airbrush artist has wanted to paint a new Fountain offering. And thanks to his Wisconsin-based friends and clients, Carl and Diana Doemel, he’s getting his chance with a new Fountain 43NX center console powered by quad Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines.

Stephen Miles Design is painting this new Fountain 43NX center console for a couple in Wisconsin.

In January, Miles and his crew completed the paintjob on the Doemel’s Outerlimits SL 52 sportboat. (In the process, he also acquired their 37-foot Outerlimits center console.) Their new 43-foot center console arrived at his shop on July 22.

“When we started, we were going to match the graphic design we did for their Outerlimits, but there was no way.,” said Miles, who also currently is painting an SL 52 for another customer. “The Outerlimits is long and narrow and this boat is tall and wide, But we were able to use all of the same colors.

“Designing graphics for center consoles is challenging because the body lines put you in a box,” he continued. “My job is to accent the lines of the boat already provided, not to change them.”

Next up for Miles is the paintwork on a new MTI 390X owned by New York’s Johnny O’Loughlin.

“Working with people like Carl and Johnny is what I love most about this business,” he said. “The people I get to know and become close friends with through our working together are incredible.”
