More than a few high-performance marine industry businesses shut down from Christmas week through the New Year’s day. Stephen Miles Design of Owensboro, Ky., however, isn’t one of them. In fact, the company’s namesake and his crew have a lot to keep them busy for the next week, starting with the paintjob of a new SL 44 sportboat from Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats in Bristol, R.I.
“The SL 44 is heading back to Outerlimits next week,” said Miles. “It’s been a really fun project.”
After Stephen Miles Design completes the paint-work for this 44-footer from Outerlimits, the company will tackle a 30-foot Phantom followed by its first 37-foot Outerlimits catamaran.
Once the 44-footer exits the SMD facility, Miles will begin working on a smaller graphics project, a 30-foot Phantom V-bottom. The boat belongs to his longtime friend Jose F. Rodriguez, Jr., who lives in Key West, Fla.
Miles won’t have a lot of time to get the Phantom done. A new Outerlimits SC 37 catamaran—his first to paint—will be heading his way after the SL 44 arrives in Bristol.

“We’re painting that one for our good friends Jeremy, Kristie and Tyler Tschida of Wisconsin,” he said. “We’re really looking forward to it.”
