With 57 teams registered for this weekend’s 11th annual Great Lakes Grand Prix—more than doubling the boat counts for all of the previous Michigan City, Ind., contests—race director Rick Wright and his fellow organizers wisely scheduled the Class 2, 4, 5 and 7 contests for today. (The action actually began with personal watercraft racing this morning.) And as they have in all four of their prior races in the six-contest American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series being produced by the Offshore Powerboat Association and Powerboat P1 groups, the Simmons Marine cockpit duo of driver/owner Jim Simmons and throttleman Jason Zolecki prevailed in Class 4.

All standings are unofficial at this point, but if today’s results hold the Simmons team, which runs a 34-foot open-cockpit Phantom V-bottom, will have a lock on the Class 4 APBA series title.
The Class 2 victory went to Jim Watson and Mitchell Watson in Sommerset Boat Lifts, while Reindl One Design took checkered flag in Class 5. The Goofin’ Around team of driver Matt Lauer and throttleman Joe Lauer claimed the Class 7 win.

Tomorrow’s four races are scheduled to begin at noon. The will be broadcast live on OPA Racing Facebook page tomorrow starting a noon (CST).
