Season-High Five Super V Teams Registered For Key West Worlds

The waters off Key West, Fla., will roar as they haven’t for years at the upcoming Race World Offshore World Championships thanks to the biggest Super V-class turnout in recent history. With registration still open—and in its middle stages based on event history—five Super V teams have signed up for the November 2-9 affair.

The currently registered teams are Cortez Cove Fountain Racing, Dart/Race Winning Brands, DSK Marine, Knucklehead Racing and Twisted. While the Team Farnsworth Super V has not officially entered at present, owner Win Farnsworth said the team is committed to next month’s competition.

“We will be there,” Farnsworth said.

Running 572-cubic-inch V-8 stern drive engines, Super V raceboats produce more ground-rumbling sound than any other class in offshore racing. For that reason, plus their more-consumer-familiar hull type, they are among the most popular boats among offshore racing fans. Still, the class has struggled in recent years to attract more than one or two entries per race.

That five—and soon to be six—of the 60 boats registered so far for Key West are in the Super V class is an extraordinary development.

“This is absolutely fantastic news,” said throttleman Rob Lockyer, who co-owns Cortez Cove team with Simon Williams of GoGPS and shares the cockpit with driver Kirk Britto. “This shaping up to be a great Key West championship.”
