Roar Offshore Poker Run Dovetailing With Fort Myers Offshore Season-Opener

For members of the Southwest Florida go-fast boating community as well as out-of-towers who hauled their pleasure boats to last Saturday’s Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach event, the upcoming weekend is a busy one. On Friday, October 15, the Fort Myers Offshore group kicks off its 2021/2022 season with a lunch fun to Useppa Island. Originally launched in 2020 as a fun run in lieu of the cancelled race, the second-year Roar Offshore Poker Run is on tap the following morning.

And all roads lead to Tim Hill, the key organizer last weekend’s race as well as the upcoming poker run and the president of Fort Myers Offshore, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for college and technical/trade school scholarships.

“For those who are in town early enough for Saturday poker run, we’re going to do the do the Fort Myers Offshore Run on Friday,” said Hill.

Saturday’s poker run can accommodate 60 boats. At present, said Hill, registration is a little more than half full but as the weekend draws closer sign-ups will surge. Hill is encouraging would-be participants to register as early as possible.

Poker-run participants in town early for the Saturday event will be welcome to head to Ussepa Island for lunch with the Fort Myers Offshore group.

“We would like to be over 40 boats for sure—last year I think we had 32,” he said. “With the poker run the weekend following the race, it’s kind of like the ‘Roar Offshore double-header. I know of at least three people— Ryan McClaren, Darren Waligora, Dana Ridge—who came for the races and are staying for the poker run.”

Friday’s Fort Myers Offshore lunch run will be followed by a welcome celebration from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Westin Cape Coral Resort.
