Registration For 25th Annual Desert Storm Poker Run Closing Tomorrow

Time is running out for would-be participants to sign up for the Desert Storm Poker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Registration for the April 19-23 event, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, closes tomorrow.

Some 100 boats have registered so far, though that number doesn’t include the 20-plus sponsors boats signed up for the run. The event is under new ownership this year as Lake Havasu City locals Jim Russell and Steve Ticknor purchased Desert Storm from longtime owners Christina and Jim Nichols, Jr., in late 2022.

“Tomorrow is the traditional closing day for Desert Storm, and with us getting somewhat of a late start we really can’t keep it open any longer,” Russell said.

Between their own learning curve and implementing new systems, Russell conceded that planning and producing the event has been more challenging than he or his partner expected. In addition to working through the established aspects of producing Desert Storm, which is once again presented this year by KICKER Marine Audio, they have launched a new website and are implementing new systems.

Returning Desert Storm title sponsor KICKER Marine Audio will once again have its own card-stop at the event.

“We are trying to make slight changes and improvements as we go along,” Russell said. “We’re working diligently to bring the 25th anniversary to life.”

Russell and Ticknor have met with Dave Johnson, the founder of the popular River Dave’s Place online community, and Lake of the Ozarks-based Super Cat Fest founder Alvin Heathman, who are producing Super Cat Fest West. The event happens the week after Desert Storm.

“We are very friendly with Dave and Alvin,” Russell explained. “We are all working toward the same thing, improving the boating experience on Lake Havasu and launching the official start of ‘summer’ here in April.

Coming back this year, the ever-popular Thursday Desert Storm street party and hardware exhibit in Lake Havasu City is one of the event’s cornerstones.
