For the Key West, Fla.-based Race World Offshore organization, the propellers will meet the water, so to speak, at the Cleveland Construction Mentor Offshore Grand Prix July 20-22 on Lake Erie in Ohio. While this will be the third year an offshore powerboat race has been held in the often-rugged waters beyond Headlands Beach Park—Super Boat International previously produced the contest—it will be Race World Offshore’s first sanctioned event.

According to an RWO press release sent this morning, the “Roar Off The Shore” event will feature “new activities and more opportunities for fans to see these high-performance powerboats up close and for a chance to meet the race teams.”
The Grand Prix Race Village will be at the Great Lakes Mall starting Friday, July 20. Weekend activities will include pre-race testing on Saturday, starting at noon, with viewing from Headlands Beach.
“Saturday night brings a new and exciting event, when the teams take the raceboats to downtown Willoughby for a Powerboat Block Party, beginning at 7:30 p.m.,” the release stated. “Sunday’s ‘Roar Off The Shore’ commences at 11 a.m. with the opening of a Bier Garden tent and public viewing at the Headlands Beach State Park. Races kick off at noon Sunday. Fans are encouraged to arrive early with large crowds expected from the two previous years.”
Race World Offshore will follow up next weekend’s Mentor contest with its Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix, also on Lake Erie, Aug. 17-19 in Dunkirk, N.Y. Both events will be showcased in a one-hour, nationally broadcast CBS Sports television sports program to be aired in early 2019.
“I am looking forward to our first race here in Mentor,” said Larry Bleil, the founder of Race World Offshore, in the release “It has been a long year getting things off the ground, but it is perfect timing by having our first ever sanctioned event tied to the third Annual Mentor Offshore Grand Prix. We are grateful that (Cleveland Construction offshore racing team owner) Mark Small and Cleveland Construction gave us that opportunity.”
