Project: Interior Makeover For White Outerlimits 39 GTX Complete

Forget unicorns—if you’re searching for something truly rare and exotic, try to find a white Outerlimits. Brian Mihelis of Massachusetts has what could be the only one in the form of a 39 GTX transformed by Stephen Miles Design late last year from its original red and blue colors to the one hue defined “as the absence of color.” And now, thanks to a winter project handled by the Outerlimits crew in Bristol, R.I., the 39-footer built in 2005 has a brand-new “color-matched” interior.

Built in 2005, this Outerlimits 39 GTX sportboat has new life thanks to the teams at Outerlimits and Stephen Miles Design.

“I got it back this Monday,” said Mihelis, who plans to run the boat this summer with his wife, Taylor, and their two children. “It’s nice to finally be able say it’s done.”

“I wanted it to be neutral—all black and white,” he added. “It wanted it to be like a blank canvas. It came out awesome.”

According to Outerlimits’ Dan Kleitz, the interior renovation happened between new boat builds, and though the project was mostly cosmetic it also proved to be extensive.

“We ripped out all the old gauges, the wiring and the dashes,” he said. “We put in new carbon fiber dashes, new Garmin touchscreen GPS units and the latest Mercury VesselView monitors. The dash had yellow toggle switches and the throttles had yellow handles. We replaced them with black switches and black handles.

“We built and installed a brand-new white vinyl interior with black Alcantara accents, and also put in a new cockpit carpet,” he added. “We even did some work on the stereo.”

Originally built with 710-hp Ilmor Marine engines, Jim Wiley, the GTX 39’s owner prior to Mihelis, repowered the boat with Mercury Racing 700 SCi engines and No. 6 drives. According to Mihelis, who had Outerlimits inspect the drives while the boat was at the facility during the winter, the engines have 100 operating hours.

While Mihelis said he “has an eye” on another new Outerlimits, he’s not actively trying to sell his 39 GTX, one of a handful ever built. “Well, I guess ‘everything is for sale’ at a certain price, but right now I just want to enjoy it with my family,” he said.

Kleitz said he’d like Outerlimits to tackle more renovation/restoration projects for its customers. “We’re definitely open to it,” he said. “We’ve done several projects similar to this one for our clients. We want to be a ‘one-stop shop’ for Outerlimits customers.”
