Porta Products Corporation recently announced its new Porta R-Series is now available for Mercury Racing’s “R Series” engines ranging from the 250R through the new 450R. The new high-performance Porta R-Series is a cockpit-activated, adjustable hydraulic transom bracket designed for per-engine applications from 250 hp up to 750 hp. Unlike common jack plate designs, the stability and rigidity of the engine bracket actually increases as it is raised with the Porta R-Series hydraulically adjustable transom bracket, according to a press release from the New Smyrna Beach, Fla., company owned by veteran offshore racer Scott Porta.
The new Porta R-Series adjustable transom brackets are now available for Mercury Racing’s 4.6L V-8 engines ranging from 250 to 450 hp.
Designed for vessels that cruise faster than 100 mph—yet also effective on boats at 60-plus-mph speeds—the Porta R-Series has the ability to remotely (with just the touch of a finger) and incrementally adjust the prop shaft height relative to the running surface of the hull, which is critical because 1/16 of an inch can equal an extra one mph.
The Porta R-Series is available in 8-, 10- and 12-inch setback dimensions with a height adjustment from 2.25 inches to 6.5 inches respectively. Prices start at $2,500 for the 8-inch setback model for the 300R in a black hard-coat anodized finish. Additional setbacks are slightly higher in price, and multiple engines on the same bracket increase the costs as well.
According to the release, several high-performance remote adjustment controls are available and every hand-built Porta transom bracket, regardless of age, operates under full load effortlessly for any horsepower outboard.
Porta said the concept came from an offshore racing need as he was commissioned to design the aerodynamics and running surface of a 32-foot catamaran raceboat. The boat, equipped with the Porta R-Series hydraulically adjustable transom bracket, earned multiple national and world championships and the bracket eventually was outlawed from the class after it was deemed an “unfair advantage.”
Now that bracket technology is available in the new Porta R-Series for cruiser and center console OEMs, parts distributors, boat dealers and high-performance rigging shops. Additionally, the F-Series (fishing version) is designed for shallow water and obstruction clearance applications, and is available in setbacks of 17 to 26 inches and vertical movement from 12 to 24 inches.
