Photo Essay: Miami Boat Show Poker Run By Yvonne Aleman

For her first poker run photo-essay, new speedonthewater.com photographer/correspondent Yvonne Aleman drew a tough hand. After all, weather has a way of wreaking havoc on even the most well-established go-fast boating events, and by most accounts the wind and cold faced by participants in last week’s Florida Powerboat Club‘s Miami Boat Show Poker Run were the worst in the history of the event. But Aleman braved the elements came back with a series of compelling images from the run, which attracted approximately 90 boats and 400 participants.

While Aleman makes her living as a certified public accountant, she’s transformed her photography hobby into a legitimate craft. Thanks to her passion for performance boating, she has an eye for composition and catching moments that are both familiar and fresh.

Two days of howling winds, low-50-degree temperatures and intermittent cloud cover did not make her mission—delivering photos from Friday and Saturday that encapsulated the happenings on those days—easy. But as we’re sure you’ll agree, Aleman pulled it off. That she followed ace photographer Pete Boden, who created a portfolio of images from the poker run’s action last Thursday for this site, made her job even harder. And again, Aleman rose to the challenge.

“South Florida plus gorgeous performance boats plus friends equals the perfect photography recipe, right?” she said. “Not always. This past weekend, Mother Nature had other plans for our sun-starved boating family and anyone trying to capture great photos. Despite some heavy lighting challenges, idle boats and cabin fever presented different kinds of photo opportunities for me.”

“Our boating family made the best of gloomy skies and chilly winds by throwing on hoodies and carrying on in usual great spirits,” she continued. “Friends gathered on boat decks, huddled around heaters and explored new venues in the Florida Keys. I was there like a shutter fly trying to capture it all and learned a lot about taking photos in less than optimal conditions.”

Mission accomplished.
