Photo Essay: Faces Of The Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix

Between Thursday evening’s event-opening Suncoast Summer Fest Waves And Wheels Party at Robarts Arena and the following day’s VIP meet-and-greet happening followed by a block party in downtown Sarasota, Fla., fans on hand for the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix haven’t lacked for opportunities to rub shoulders with racers. And after a pandemic year in which shoulder-rubbing was discouraged, by all accounts the atmosphere in Sarasota this week has been joyful—and electric.

Super Stock-class racer and two-time defending F1 H2O world champion Shaun Torrente (left) struck a pose on the deck of his 32-foot Doug Wright raceboat with former Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees world series champion Johnny Damon on Friday—and then treated him to a VIP ride today. Though the final count is not in, approximately 60-plus teams are either in town or on their way according to Azam Rangoonwala, the chief executive officer of Powerboat P1/P1 Offshore.

Speedonthewater.com chief photographer chief photographer Pete Boden, who lives in nearby Bradenton, has been on hand to capture all of the social hijinks in advance of tomorrow’s races, which are scheduled to start with the Bracket classes at 10 a.m. and will be livestreamed on the P1 Offshore Facebook page. Boden hit all the events of the past two days and came back with a slew of fine images, the best of which likely will end up in our Year In Review print edition (you can buy past issues here).

But that’s quite a way off.

Things take a more-focused and serious turn today with testing and practice sessions on Sarasota Bay. And they’ll get even more so tomorrow when the green flags fly.

In the meantime, enjoy the faces of the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix. Whether you’re there this weekend or at home, we hope they bring a smile to yours.
