The first race of the domestic Powerboat P1 USA SuperStock 2017 season is set for Saturday, May 20 on East Lake Tohopekaliga in Kissimmee/St. Cloud, Fla. The series, which features Mercury Marine outboard engine-powered open-cockpit V-bottoms, is returning to the popular venue to kick off the year with an eight-boat fleet, according to a press release from Powerboat P1 USA.
Organizers of the P1 SuperStock circuit are expecting eight teams to compete in the next month’s season opener.
“Our P1 SuperStock powerboat series, sponsored by Spectre Powerboats, continues to gain momentum and recognition and it boasts the most extensive television package in powerboat racing with coverage in more than 150 countries,” said Azam Rangoonwala, the managing director of P1 USA, in the release. “With St. Cloud’s long history of powerboat racing this is a great venue to launch the new season, and the double bill of Spectre P1 SuperStock action and AquaX racing will serve up a feast of top class marine motorsport entertainment for all the family.”
Returning SuperStock race teams reportedly include GEICO, SouthEastern Lighting Solutions, Visit Jacksonville, and Frank & Al’s Pizza. Fox Sports will again be covering this year’s race and the broadcast will be aired in June, according to the release.
“For the sixth consecutive year we are thrilled to welcome back the action-packed Powerboat P1 racing to Kissimmee,” said John Poole, the Kissimmee Sports Commission director of Sports Marketing and Development, in the release. “This event is just one example of Kissimmee’s diverse sporting industry that directly impacts local economic development. We hope to continue growing this partnership for years to come.”
