Outerlimits’s Joe Sgro In Critical Condition After Powerboat Crash

Story update: Dr. Michael Janssen, a close friend of Joe Sgro and a longtime Outerlimits customer, reported via telephone at 4:38 p.m. that Sgro has died. During the emergency medical flight from Marathon to Miami, his conditioned worsened. They were forced to land at a closer medical facility and his life could not be saved.

Joe Sgro the principal of Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats in Bristol, R.I., was seriously injured today in a crash in his 50-foot canopied Outerlimits V-bottom during the Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run. According to several reports, the 50-footer rolled near the Faro Blanco Resort and Yacht Club in Marathon, Fla.

Shown here during the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, this 52-foot Outerlimits was involved in crash today that left Joe Sgro critically injured.

Sgro was taken to the Fishermen’s Community Hospital in Marathon. Although patient privacy laws prevented a hospital spokesperson from providing additional detail, Sgro, who is in critical condition, reportedly was revived several times before being airlifted to a Miami-area hospital.

The cause of the accident has not been confirmed, nor has whether Sgro was piloting the boat, or if any of the other four people on board were injured in the solo-vessel incident.
