On Tap This Weekend: Sold-Out Orange Beach Powerboat Week

With 55 registered boats, this weekend’s Florida Powerboat Club Orange Beach Powerboat Week Poker Run will up last year’s record-setting total for the Alabama event by just one entry. But getting there was a bit of a jigsaw puzzle for club president Stu Jones, who secured 46 slips at The Wharf, the host venue for the two-day poker run.

“Because The Wharf is such a popular destination, transient dock space is tough,” Jones said. “We ‘sold out’ every spot we had pretty early and we started a waiting list, but I must have had 10 cancellations in the past two weeks for a boat problem or COVID. As each member canceled, we moved another one in.”

As it did the last year, the poker run heads East on Friday and West on Saturday.

Jones emphasized that the entire event would not be possible without Scott Favre and his father, Art. Not only do they own The Wharf, as well as a new Sunsation 40 CCX center console and a 44-foot MTI catamaran, Scott Favre is a Florida Powerboat Club member.

“I call it ‘Scott’s run’ because we do it together,” Jones said. “He even hosts the sponsor appreciation party at his house.

“They just took delivery of their Sunsation at our Tampa Bay event,” he added. “And now they get to run it in their own event.”
