Offshore Racer Dan Lawrence Escapes Serious Injury After Emergency Landing

The day after winning the third and final race at the Super Boat International Key West Offshore World Championships, Dan Lawrence had to make an emergency landing in the the waters near Everglades National Park on Monday.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, Lawrence, who finished second overall in the Superboat Stock class with driver Robert Nunziato, was flying his single-engine aircraft from Marathon, Fla. to Sarasota, Fla., when the plane started to lose power.

The throttleman of The Hulk, a 32-foot Doug Wright catamaran, made an emergency landing in the vicinity of the park. According to an Associated Press report, officials said he was found standing on the plane’s wing. A Coast Guard crew airlifted Lawrence to Miami in stable condition.

According to offshore racer Ryan Beckley, who also competes in the Superboat Stock class, Lawrence was back at his home in Siesta Key in Sarasota this evening and doing OK.
