Nordic Boats recently finished its first 29 Deck Boat with twin Mercury Verado 350 engines.
Nordic Boats recently completed the first of two deck boats ordered by customers with outboard power. The Lake Havasu City, Ariz., boatbuilder finished the 29 Deck Boat with a pair of Mercury Verado 350 engines, and according to Nordic’s John Lovell, the 29-foot catamaran has reached a top speed of 86 mph.
“Keep in mind we have engines on a twin-engine cat that were designed for a center-console fishing boat,” Lovell said. “We’ve ran from 32-inch-pitch props down to 28-inch-pitch props and the boat is consistently in the mid-80s with any prop. The acceleration is great for a boat this size.”
Lovell said that the boat handles very well and is fun to drive with the outboard package. He added that the customer is still playing with setup, including trying different lower units to try to raise the height of the engines.
By installing outboard engines, Nordic was able to lengthen the cockpit by 10 inches to provide a roomier seating area for passengers.
The second outboard-powered 29 Deck Boat—featuring a pair of Mercury OptiMax 300XS outboard engines—is nearly finished, according to Lovell.
