When discussions began in 2020, the point of producing the Speed On The Water “In The Lead” video series with our partners at Scrapyard Media was to feature the most accomplished and innovative racers, builders, influencers and entrepreneurs in the powerboat industry with support from title sponsor Mercury Racing. And, as the curtain comes down on season two with today’s debut of episode No. 13, I’m certain no one who has been featured so far is more deserving of the spotlight than the most experienced individual we’ve highlighted to date, Bob Teague, the founder Teague Custom Marine in Valencia, Calif.

To be honest, I’m a little biased because of all the time I’ve spent with Teague from Powerboat magazine days, following projects at his facility and the many interviews I’ve done with him after claiming another offshore racing checkered flag or sponsoring the well-known Desert Storm and Big Cat poker runs. Still, take a look at his 50-year career and then try to persuade me that anyone else has done as much for this sport as Teague. His passion for performance boats in second to none, as is the impact he’s had on the performance boating industry from boat tests to product development to his insightful “Teague On Tech” columns that have been published in Powerboat, Performance Boats and now Speedboat magazines.
Just a little side note here, but I met Teague and his family years before I started working at Powerboat when I was a college intern for a local newspaper in Ventura, Calif., covering the Pacific Offshore Powerboat Racing Association event in the same town and he was racing the well-known Team Woody 39-foot Extreme V-bottom with his longtime friend, Larry Kramer. I didn’t know a lot about racing at the time, but Teague, who was the POPRA president, spent several minutes with me explaining the sport and introducing me to people I could interview for my recap for the Ventura County Star.
Fast forward almost 30 years and there I was at the end of September setting up interviews at Teague Custom Marine with his amazing wife, Andrea, and their superstar daughter, Cherilyn, a key member of the TCM team who is married to Josh Noack, the company’s service manager. Of course, we had a great time shooting with all of the employees and some of Teague’s close friends, including DCB’s Jeff Johnston and his former offshore racing teammate Paul Whittier, but my favorite part was talking to Teague about his service. His service to this country in U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, his service to his city as a Los Angeles Fire Department Captain and his service to this industry as the most-respected test driver to ever take the wheel of a performance boat.
And the best part about it all? The industry icon, who often refers to himself as “just a dumb boat mechanic,” is still leading the way, 50 years after founding the business that “provides everything but the water.”
Well, if you haven’t already started watching the video featuring one of the most recognizable names and faces in the performance boat world, be sure to set aside some time today to enjoy “In The Lead with Bob Teague of Teague Custom Marine” to learn more about the dedicated. Special thanks to Mercury Racing and the other series supporting sponsors—MYCO Trailers, Bluave Marine Audio, Hamilton Marine Finance and Race World Offshore—for allowing us to tell the stories (in video form) of the most accomplished and innovative racers, builders, influencers and entrepreneurs in the powerboat industry.
