Mystic Business Booming

Spent a little time with John Cosker of Mystic Powerboats at the Miami International Boat Show this afternoon. Cosker, a formally trained naval architect who owns the company and designs all its seriously high-end, high-performance catamarans and V-bottoms, told me he currently has five models in production. If that doesn’t sound like much, consider this: They’re all at least 50 feet long.

“Things are going really well for us—we’re busy,” said Cosker. “And I’ve been able to hire some really skilled, high-quality craftsmen. With a lot of builders slow, it’s a good time for that, and there are a lot of high-quality people available.”

On a personal note, I find the ongoing success of Mystic gratifying. The world of high-performance powerboats is full of over-the-top egos and jumbo personalities, which makes Cosker’s quiet and understated manner refreshing. Plus, he’s just plain nice. His formidable talent—his products speak for themselves—and unfailing humility are a winning combination.

Now it’s off to the Florida Powerboat Club Party at the Raleigh Hotel with party sponsor Bob Christie of Typhoon Service Center, his wife, Madelyn, Frank Civitano and his wife, Melissa, and Joe Nasso.

I love my job.
