Muskegon Powerboat Weekend: 62 Boats And Counting

A hub of summertime activity on the water, Muskegon, Mich., is heading into a weekend celebration of high-performance powerboats and more thanks to West Michigan Offshore, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for charity through the generosity of its members. As of this morning, 62 of those members have signed up for the event, which begins Friday with a powerboat showcase followed by a Saturday boat parade and poker run.

West Michigan president Roger Zuidema said he is expecting registration to reach 70 boats.

“Lake Michigan is blessing us,” said Zuidema. “It looks like it’s going to be a great weekend with less than two-foot waves, a high temperature of 78 degrees and sunny.”

Set up at LST393 historic ship exhibit, the showcase will open to the public at 4 p.m. and will remain open until dusk. At 8:30 p.m., Michigander Alex Pratt’s 50-foot turbine engine-powered Good Boy Vodka/XINSURANCE Mystic Powerboats catamaran will put on a show of its own in front of Legends Bar and Grill Friday night in downtown Muskegon.

“We have a good group of 20 boats for the (Friday night) showcase of all different makes models and sizes, which represents our club perfectly,” he added. “I’m looking forward to seeing the Good Boy Vodka Mystic’s turbine engines fire off at Legends on Friday night. It should be a great show.”

Following the event’s traditional “Power Parade” through Muskegon Channel leading to Lake Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday, the poker run tackle a course to Whitelake and Grand Haven before returning to its starting point. A celebration and charity auction is on tap that night at the Goodboy Vodka Poker Run Village tent.

“This is a community celebration of Muskegon’s great water venue,” said Zuidema. “From participants to onlookers, we hope that all will enjoy. It’s going to be great to welcome some of the biggest most powerful boats from all over the country to Muskegon.”
