Word out of Marine Technology, Inc., in Wentzville, Mo., is that the company is working on a 48-foot-long “theme” catamaran with a pair of Mercury Racing 1,350-hp turbocharged engines. The boat will be unveiled at the 2011 Miami International Boat Show in February.
The natural question, of course, is: What’s the theme?
“The customer wants that to be a surprise,” said Randy Scism, the principal of MTI. “We’ve helped him dream up some stuff—we’ve built for him before—but he’s not going to go completely wild.
“We seem to do a lot of theme boats,” he added. “It’s going to be a push to get this one ready in time for Miami, but we’ll get it done. The customer wants to take it on the Miami Boat Show poker run after the show.”
Without question, MTI has proven to be at the top of the theme-based go-fast catamaran game. Notable creations in that category include the Mercedes 44 MTI owned by Gino Gargiulo, the Speed Racer 44 MTI owned by Bob Christie and, most recently, the Terminator 48 MTI owned by Albert Haynesworth, an All-Pro defensive tackle for the Washington Redskins.
Speculation that Haynesworth might build yet another themed MTI—he has owned three—with a pair Mercury Racing 1350s has proven to be just that. At least for now.
“My understanding today is that Albert will re-power Terminator with 1350s,” said Scism. “But that could change between now and February.”
