From the day we came up with our In The Lead documentary-style video series concept, MTI founder Randy Scism was on our short list of subjects. But it took until our second season in 2022—with support from primary backer Mercury Racing as well as MYCO Trailers, CP Performance, Hamilton Marine Finance, Hardin Marine, Bluave Marine Audio and Race World Offshore—to get it done.
Through their intimate customer-appreciation events, Cherell, Randy and Taylor Scism have welcomed clients into the MTI brand family.
Good things, of course, take time and for the MTI faithful and performance boating fans in general the 14-minute segment proved worth the wait. For anyone interested in the heyday of Class 1 racing in the late 1980s and early 1990s when Scism was a member of the Victory Team from the growth of MTI as a thriving brand now celebrating its 25th anniversary, it’s a must-watch video.
To make it happen, we headed to MTI in Wentzville, Mo., last May to meet up with the Scrapyard Media team and start shooting Scism, his wife, Cherell, and daughter, Taylor, and the other members of the MTI team. (A day before we arrived, we finished up primary interview shooting for In The Lead With Tyler Miller in Wathena, Kan.) We spent the better part of an entire day in the MTI factory, where we interviewed longtime MTI client Jake Nossaman and Scism’s most recent offshore racing teammates, Bob Bull and John Tomlinson.
The interaction between Bull and Tomlinson borders on hilarious. Both are typically soft-spoken and reserved, but their interview together was a no-holds-barred affair as they told their respective tales of racing with the MTI principal. In short, their interview became a mild roast of their longtime pal.
From there we moved to Scism’s Wentzville home to shoot, and then the next morning we headed to their Lake of the Ozarks digs to finish up. But one thing stood out regardless of setting. Randy and Cherell are rightly proud of their daughters. Taylor is MTI’s client relations manager. Her sister, Chelsea, is an assistant federal prosecutor in New York City.
