That the Miss GEICO offshore racing team finished fifth overall out of eight Unlimited class teams that competed in the 2016 Super Boat International Offshore World Championships speaks to the frustration experienced by the 2013 and 2014 World Championship winners. But the latest promotional video for the three-part NBC Sports television program capturing the 2016 event in Key West, Fla., gives viewers an inside look at Miss GEICO’s engine program woes—and the team’s attempts to resolve them during SBI Key West Worlds—through the eyes of team manager/crew chief Gary Stray.

“I knew about halfway down the first straightaway that we had some intercooler issues,” Strays in a voiceover on the video showing installation of one the 44-foot Victory catamaran’s engines being installed in high-speed. “We actually measure inlet air temperature—that’s the air that enters the last place before it actually enters the engine. And we have a window that we want to stay within before it can cause collateral damage to the engine.”

The culprit, Stray explains, turns out to be saltwater getting on the crank trigger sensor on the bottom of one the boat’s engines. “That controls the whole ignition system,” he says. “We’re doing a double engine change. We have some fantastic guys on the team. We should be done by early afternoon.”

In addition to the engine-installation footage and Stray’s voiceover, the video includes external and internal cockpit running footage of the raceboat.
