Decked out with electronic goodies including a night vision system and radar, a Mystic Powerboats M3900 luxury performance center console was delivered yesterday to B.J. Baker (above) in Naples, Fla. Baker, who has a winter home in the scenic Florida Gold Coast community and lives in Des Moines, Iowa, previously owned a 42 Lightning from Fountain Powerboats with twin Mercury Racing 700SCi engines he purchased from Shogren Performance Marine, Mystic’s global dealer in Gurnee, Ill., as well as a Sea-Ray 380 Sundancer sport yacht.
“I needed something a little more versatile so I got rid of both of those boats,” said Baker, who ran his new 39-footer powered by quad Mercury Verado 400R outboard engines from Naples Harbor to Hamilton Harbor before putting it on the boat lift behind his home. “The Fountain was a little much, and the Sundancer was OK if you wanted to go 25 or 30 mph. The center console has a lot more room. It feels like the Sundancer, but runs like the Fountain.
“We’ll be spending the next five days running it,” he added. “I just took delivery of the boat, but it feels very solid and very stable. She’ll sneak across 70 mph and run right up past 80 mph.”

Baker is married and has four adult children with ages ranging from 20 to 30. Family vacations in Naples, he said, are a major priority for the Baker clan and he bought the M3900, which has an air-conditioning system for its cabin, with that in mind.
“It’s spacious and I’m impressed with all the features like the windshield,” he said. “I also bought the Mystic because I was impressed with (company principal) John Cosker’s engineering and racing background and my relationship with Scott Sjogren. I like the way the boat was thought through—I like the detail behind it. Some center consoles out there are utility or sport fishing boats. They’re not geared for high-performance. The Mystic is different.”
