Last week, during a family getaway near San Diego, I took a quick drive over to El Cajon, Calif., to visit the gang at Dave’s Custom Boats (DCB). I hadn’t stopped by the shop in at least a year, and my timing was great as the hull for the new M41 Widebody catamaran was being prepped for the gelcoat application process.
Since my visit, the gelcoat has been applied to the bottom mold and—as of an update on Monday evening from DCB’s Paul Miller—the lamination schedule was going well. The 100-percent full epoxy infusion was being handled through vacuum bagging technology. And the complete carbon-fiber boat also includes carbon and Kevlar in the running surface areas.
Dave Hemmingson, founder and co-owner of DCB, was definitely in good spirits after relaxing with friends and family during a Memorial Day weekend trip to Arizona’s Lake Havasu. Hemmingson said he hit the water as well as the links, getting in a couple of rounds on the golf course.
It was easy to see that Hemmingson was excited about the progress being made on the 41-footer as well as the nearly complete expansion of a couple of the shop’s buildings to accommodate the M41 Widebody. After seeing how massive the hull and deck molds are for the company’s largest model to date, it’s obvious an increase in building sizes was necessary.
Also nearing completion at the shop was the company’s latest M31 Widebody cat, a striking blue, gray and black model that was ready to be rigged with twin Mercury Racing HP700SCi engines and all of the other accessories and components that go along with it.
