Lake Cumberland Thunder Run On Track With Star Power And More

Justin Lucas, the main man behind the Lake Cumberland Thunder Run set this year for June 16-18 on the Kentucky waterway, likes to tease his closer friends. In fact, if you know him and he doesn’t poke fun or generally mess you now and then, he probably doesn’t like you.

Asked if there’s anything new this year for the 14th annual event, Lucas immediately mentioned his longtime friend Stephen Miles of Stephen Miles Design. And judging from his response, Lucas likes his fellow Kentuckian. A lot.

“Rumor has it that the world famous Stephen Miles is going to make an appearance at the Thunder Run for the first time this year,” he quipped. “Anyone who wants to catch a glimpse of the elusive Miles out of his natural habitat be sure to come out.

“Don’t be afraid to approach him and ask for his autograph,” he added, then laughed. “Just be sure to refer to him as ‘superstar’ as that is how he likes to be addressed.”

All in good fun, of course, but even minus a Miles appearance the event is on track for a strong showing. Some 60 boat owners have registered so far and Lucas said he expects 25 to 30 more sign-ups depending on next week’s weather forecast.

The Lake Cumberland Thunder Run attracts plenty of heavy hardware.

While mostly unchanged from the 2021 schedule and plan, this year’s Thunder Run does have a few new wrinkles including a currently secret Friday “bonus stop” hosted by Nick Evans and the Recovered Money crew. Evans, who owns a 50-foot Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats catamaran, will be giving away a boat during the event.

On the more familiar side of things for returning participants, DJ X-Tina will handle the entertainment on Friday and Saturday night.

Added Lucas, “Another new change?” This year Pete Boden of Shoot 2 Thrill Pix and speedonthewater.com will photograph the event from the air and from the water.”

Now that’s some real star power.
