Inside SOTW Mag: The Man Behind the Curtain

No matter how it is you know Todd Taylor, one of the last words you would come up with to describe the easygoing, long-haired Lake Havasu City, Ariz., boater is “retired.” Yet the man who is best known as the owner of Jokers Wild Productions and the ace photographer for Speedboat magazine is just that—he retired from the Santa Monica Police Department in 2000.

Since then, he’s been hard at work on his second career in the boating industry, a career that continues to grow, evolve and keep him busy. Take the recent Desert Storm Poker Run in Lake Havasu City. Chances are you won’t find anyone at that event who worked harder than Taylor during the course of a week.

Not only did he and his dependable associate, John “Spider Monkey” Zucalla (as well as his English Bulldog pal, Meaty), install an additional 500 feet of dock space for the poker run in early May, Taylor’s Jokers Wild Productions, which has been responsible for many powerboat manufacturer’s regattas since he took over the business in 2001, supplied the equipment and setup services for the event’s top-speed shootout. The event ended up being cancelled Saturday and Sunday over concerns with the weather, but that didn’t stop Taylor from being ready to set up the course early on both mornings.
