Inside SOTW Mag: The Erik Christiansen Interview

Erik Christiansen (right) was groomed for the top job at Mercury Racing by industry legend Fred Kiekhaefer (left).

This year, Erik Christiansen, the general manager of Mercury Racing in Fond du Lac, Wis., celebrates a couple of big anniversaries. Not only is this the 49-year-old’s fifth year heading the high-performance marine engine and accessories outfit, it’s his 20th year with Mercury Marine. And to celebrate those milestones Christiansen, who started as an engineer with Mercury’s four-stroke outboard engine program and was integral to the early development of the supercharged Verado outboard series launched in 2004, did what he’s done for the past 20 years.

He went to work.

That doesn’t mean Christiansen, who with his wife, Christa, is raising daughters Hope and Hana (the latter named for the remote Maui hamlet where she was conceived) in Port Washington, is obsessed with his job, which he took over from Fred Kiekhaefer, Mercury Racing’s longtime president and marine industry force of nature. But Christiansen loves what he does for a living, and he’s the first person to admit it.
