For Steve McKie, who works as a sales manager for a manufacturing company, the highpoint of this year’s Buffalo Poker Run on Lake Erie in Western New York wasn’t its record-setting 116-boat fleet. It wasn’t that the run, which celebrated is 23rd anniversary this year, had attracted more big go-fast boat hardware—including Joe Sgro’s Outerlimits SV 43 that earned the “World’s Fastest V-bottom” title this spring—than ever before, or that Double-R Performance, its Canada-based title sponsor brought a quad-engine 50-foot Nor-Tech catamaran and signed up to sponsor next year’s run before the late-August weekend was finished. It wasn’t presenting a check for $8,000—more than double the amount raised in 2013—to Excalibur Leisure Services, the charity support by the event.
No, for the 42-year-old president of the Western New York Offshore Powerboat Association, the the highpoint of the 2014 Buffalo Poker Run was leaping into Lake Erie from his 37-foot Active Thunder V-bottom when the run was over and letting those waters wash away the stress that comes from being one of two primary organizers for the annual event.
