Inside SOTW Mag: Skater 478 Review—One Of A Kind

In terms of unique high- performance boats, a Skater Powerboats V-bottom is about as rare as it gets. And for good reason—the Douglas, Mich., custom high-performance boat company is best known for its incredible sport and offshore catamarans that range from 24 feet to 50 feet in length and can be powered by anything from outboard engines to monster-powered supercharged or turbocharged offerings.

The list of V-bottoms built by Peter Hledin and his team at Skater over the years is short— as in you can count them on two hands—but that doesn’t mean the boats are inferior to the Skater catamarans in any way, shape or form. In fact they might even be more “one of a kind” as each one has its own story.

For example there’s the endurance-record-setting, diesel-powered 39-footer owned by Tyson Garvin, the stunning 488 that currently resides on the West Coast owned by Clay Rodrigues, a few triumphant canopied offshore raceboats and a beautiful orange and yellow 399 that I was fortunate to test nearly a decade ago for Powerboat magazine.

All unforgettable boats for sure—and now the company can add the all-new 478 to that list and put it at the top as far as pure pleasure is concerned.
