That two of the most impressive engine introductions—Seven Marine’s 627 and Mercury Racing’s 400 R—during the 2015 Miami International Boat Show were outboards should surprise absolutely no one. After all, performance center consoles are growing, as witnessed by a 57-footer coming from Marine Technology, Inc., and Nor-Tech’s pending 46- and 52-footers. Outboard engines are the power options of choice for performance center consoles and, of course, bigger boats need bigger power.
Plus, as Mercury Racing general manager Erik Christiansen pointed out during an interview for this story, “Very few people have ever asked us for less power. People keep buying larger boats, so they keep asking for bigger engines.”
What follows is a look at the five most-powerful outboard engines on the market, three of which were brought to market this year. To learn a few things we couldn’t find out from the websites of the respective outboard companies, we talked to some of the people from Mercury Racing, Mercury Marine, Seven Marine and Yamaha who are closely involved with these amazing products. Of course, we asked them about the products themselves, but we also asked them about their position in the marketplace.
