Inside SOTW Mag: Larry Goldman Tribute—Always In Service

Cover any industry long enough and you’ll get to know the key players, and some of them—despite the distance required to report objectively—will become your friends. That’s particularly true in niche businesses such as high-performance marine, where the world is small and the personalities are large.

And so it was with Larry Goldman, a 57-year-old force of nature who died suddenly in May after suffering severe stroke. Though many people knew him better and were far closer to him than we were, Larry Goldman, a frequent interview subject and resource, was our friend.

More than the head of Xtreme Powerboats at Haulover Marine Center in Miami, more than a longtime Marine Technology Inc., dealer, more than a former offshore racer, and even more than well-known go-fast powerboat owner Gino Gargiulo’s favorite throttleman and closest companion, Goldman was a legend in the high performance powerboat world.

Colorful and charismatic, Goldman was beloved well beyond South Florida, not an easy trick for a chronically over-committed, hopelessly customer service-oriented notorious for selectively answering his phone. More often that not, his customers and fellow industry members became his friends, and most of them have at least one great Larry Goldman story, at least one fond remembrance of the joyful man of good humor who is survived by his wife, Jodi, and children Jacob and Jilian.

And this is where we leave you, turning over this tribute to six of the many people who best knew him. Rest in peace, Larry Goldman. We’ll miss you.
