Anyway you look at it, participating in nine go-fast boating events across the country in a given season is an ambitious undertaking. But with last weekend’s Lake Powell Challenge based out of Page, Ariz., behind him, that’s exactly what Devin Wozencraft of the Southern California high-performance marine insurance agency that bears his name did this summer.

Speedonthewater.com co-publisher Jason Johnson, his wife, Stephanie, and their daughters, Morgan and Colbie, joined Wozencraft for a ride during last weekend’s Lake Powell Challenge.

Next to his adventure at the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run in Clayton, N.Y., the 500-plus-mile haul to Lake Powell, at 1.25-plus-million acres an expansive reservoir in the chain of Colorado River-fed waterways, was a breeze. Certainly, there were folks such as Bob Christie, who hauled his MTI 340X sport catamaran all the way from New Jersey (and described it as “the best boating weekend” of his life) who traveled farther to be there. But if anyone logged more road miles than Wozencraft to participate in boating events this season, we’d be surprised.

But wait, as they say on the television infomercials, there’s more. Though Wozencraft originally planned to call it a season after the Lake Powell Challenge, there’s an excellent chance he’ll run his 30-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran in the Southern California Offshore Powerboat Elite club’s Poker Run from Long Beach to Catalina Island at the end of the month.

And why not? With the event’s starting point less than 100 miles from his home, that one is practically in his backyard.
