With thousands of images to review and edit every year, it’s easy to miss a few gems. Case in point: Searching for a specific image I know we’ll need later this year from the 2019 American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series season-opener in Cocoa Beach, Fla., I came across one of the Class 4 Simmons Marine team that I couldn’t believe I missed. Better late than never, here it is.
Keeping communication simple in the cockpit during an offshore race is essential—just ask the Simmons Marine team of Jim Simmons and Jason Zolecki (click image to enlarge). Photo courtesy/copyright Pete Boden/Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.
Beyond the movement, colors, composition and crisp focus—all of the elements we expect from speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden—what’s most compelling about the photo is the navigation action inside the boat. As you can see, throttleman Jason Zolecki is pointing team owner/driver Jim Simmons in the direction they need to go.
Often, the best directions are the most simple.
Simmons and Zolecki took the checkered flag in Cocoa Beach and went on to run the table in the six-race series. During the season, speedothewater.com published numerous photos of the Simmons Marine Phantom V-bottom on its way to claiming a title. But none are better—or more fun—than this one.
