Long before Jeff Johnston was the president of DCB Performance Marine, he sold ads for Powerboat magazine. Tony Chiaramonte, the vice president of the Phoenix-based company, was working for Eliminator Boats at the time. Jason Johnson, the co-publisher of speedonthewater.com, was the magazine’s managing editor and eventually became its editor-in-chief. I was Powerboat’s editor-at-large.
Sounds kind of sinister, right? But it simply translates to “guy who writes and travels a lot.”

Come to think of it, that could still be my title, although this week Johnson is in Missouri covering the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout—and managing video shoots for various projects with the Scrapyard Media team. I’m at home providing whatever support they need.
Johnson sent me the photo above via email after the Tuesday night Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Bob Morgan Memorial Hall of Fame dinner celebration, which saw the induction of Chiaramonte and several other worthy contributors to the success of the event. A wave of nostalgia crashed squarely on my head when I opened it. I’ve been friends and colleagues with these guys for much of my professional life and there are so many stories to tell.
Though almost none of the better tales can—much less should—be told here.
Now Chiaramonte, like my speedonthewater.com partner, is a Shootout Hall-of-Famer. I’m a fancy media-outlet “founder and publisher”—big yawn—who still writes and travels a lot.
And Johnston? He’s just some dude named Jeff, and one of our favorite people on the planet.
