Proving that age really is just a state of mind, Jay Armstrong’s Miss U.S. 36 hydroplane stood out—and looked better than ever—in a fleet of vintage raceboats during last weekend’s Classic Raceboat Association Spring Thunder Regatta on Lake Dora in Tavares, Fla. Hard to believe that the Allison engine-powered Lauterbach hydro raceboat was built 60 years ago.

Legendary racer Jack Schaffer put the elegant and muscular beauty through its paces during the annual event, which is sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association. And photographer Pete Boden, who confesses to “being crazy” about vintage raceboats, was there to bring home the goods.
“He did a few passes at 130 mph,” said Boden. “He was hauling the mail.”
