Image of the Week: Seeing The (Really) Big Picture

Speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden offers an array of his own prints—the prettiest ones are on mounted on metal—but now and then he gets a request for something extraordinary. Such was the case when the owner of Gotcha Now, a well-known 46-foot Skater catamaran usually found on the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri, wanted an unusual—for lack of better word—size print of his beloved cat.

Ever the customer-pleaser, Boden said, “No problem” and sent the client a high-resolution jpg file. And the client, with a little help from a graphics shop, took it from there.

For folks in publishing or printing, a natural question pops up, especially when they click on the image above: How big did the file have to be to create that massive print?

“It really wasn’t all that big—I think it was 27 megs or something like that,” said Boden. “You know, if you stand up close to the STHIL offshore racing team trailer and look at the image of the boat, it pixelates a bit. But as soon as you step back a few feet, it looks great. And that was only from like a five-meg image I provided.”
