Sometimes a picture is worth more than 1,000 words. Sometimes a picture, even one as simple as the Tim Sharkey image here, goes beyond words and taps into our deepest emotions. Sometimes an image conveys things you wish you could say. Sometimes an image conveys things that simply cannot be said. Sometimes an image conveys things that can only be felt.

Taken during the Super Boat International New York event on the Hudson River on September 9—just two days shy of the eleven-year anniversary of the nation-changing horror we know as September 11—this is one of those special images. Blue skies over New York City, as blue as they were on the day Towers fell. Something missing from the skyline. A solo raceboat on the Hudson.
Whatever emotions this image stirs in you cannot be written and don’t need to be. That’s the power and magic—and priceless, timeless value—of the picture itself.
