In more ways than one, it’s been a Hollywood kind of year for John Tomlinson of TNT Custom Marine in Miami. In May, he spent an afternoon with John Travolta—and schooled him in the basics of driving an MTI-V 42 performance center console—for the famed actor’s leading role in “Speed Kills,” a feature motion picture about the life and times of performance-boat industry impresario Don Aronow.

Late last week, Tomlinson once again got the call from Hollywood to head to Hollywood—Florida, that is—to teach actor Matthew McConaughey to drive a powerboat for his role in an upcoming comedy called “The Beach Bum” about “a rebellious stoner named Moondog who lives by his own rule,” according to the film’s IMDBPro listing.
“He was a nice guy,” said Tomlinson of his student driver/actor charge. “I showed him how to drive the boat really quick and he did the scene with me lying down in the back.
“We got out of there at 1:30 a.m.,” he added. “We didn’t get back to the marina until 3:30 a.m. And it was freezing.”
Despite a long day and a late night, Tomlinson, McConaughey and fellow actor Zac Efron kept their spirits up on the water (click image to enlarge).
So much for the glamour of Hollywood.
