Thanks to Twisted Metal and Instigator-Hooters, the Superboat Extreme class survives under the Super Boat International umbrella. Without these two stalwart V-bottom teams, the class simply wouldn’t exist. So you have to admire Twisted Metal’s Brett Lee Furshman and Billy Glueck and Instigator-Hooters’ Peter Meyer and Johnny Stanch (and others who have filled in for the Instigator team) for hanging tough in the class they love.
Without the Instigator-Hooters and Twisted Metal teams shown here duking it out at the 2014 SBI National Championships in Clearwater, Fla., there wouldn’t be a Superboat Extreme class (click image to enlarge). Photo courtesy/copyright Pete Boden/Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.
With the final race of the 2015 SBI regular season—the National Championship in Clearwater, Fla.—less than a week away, the two veteran V-bottom teams will do battle once more. Unlike last year when they fielded the only two entries in the class at the SBI Nationals, this year they’ll be joined in the battle by Outerlimits, a 40-foot Outerlimits V-bottom manned by Joe Sgro and Steve Curtis.
It doesn’t matter that their fleets are small and that the Extreme class—the recent and welcome addition of the Outerlimits team duly noted—isn’t growing, the Twisted Metal and Instigator-Hooters teams show up to race at every event they enter, just as they will next weekend. (For the record, Instigator-Hooters took the class win last year in Clearwater.) They’re dedicated competitors and they put on a show, and in a sport that needs all the dedication and perseverance it can get, that counts for something.
Safe racing, gentlemen. And thank you, as always, for the show.
