Solid or partial, wakes and roostertails are among the most appealing visual elements of high-performance powerboating. They remind us not just of the medium—water—on which we play but the power and speed required to throw it in the air. In the frozen moment that is a photograph, they help define the action and create motion.
There’s only one boat in the frame in the above Jay Nichols image. And yet from all the displaced water, you know there’s plenty going on around it.
Nichols picked off this shot during the Fort Myers Offshore Fun Run, the club’s second fundraising event of the year for its scholarship charity, on March 1 to the Portobello Restaurant at Burnt Store Marine in Punta Gorda, Fla. More than 20 boats reportedly showed up for the event, the second to last in the club’s season.
