While most boaters across the country are just getting ready for the season to begin, Dr. Sam Singer—a world-renowned surgical oncologist from New York—and his friend and fellow New Yorker, Vinnie Rifice, wrapped up their third poker run of the year in Singer’s 388 Skater Powerboats catamaran with twin Mercury Racing 1350 engines.

Following a so-so weekend—weather wise at least—for this year’s Tampa Bay Poker Run, Singer is one of a handful of participants who attended the first three Florida Powerboat Club poker runs of the year.
He and Rifice completed the FPC’s Winter Poker Run to Marathon at the end of January and the Miami Boat Show Poker Run a few weeks later. And just this past weekend, the two enjoyed themselves at the Tampa Bay Poker Run, which was centered around the monumental Vinoy Renaissance Resort in St. Petersburg and attracted 60 FPC members and their gorgeous boats. Neither Friday’s fun run or Saturday’s poker run boasted calm conditions, but Friday was a nicer day as a storm rolled in Saturday that created 6-foot swells after lunch, according to Rifice.
Fortunately photographer Pete Boden was able to snag several outstanding shots on Friday, including the two in this story of Singer’s 388 running away and coming right at him. It helped that the veteran shooter flagged down Singer and Rifice just outside of the Vinoy Basin returning from lunch and asked them to make another pass. Sometimes that’s what it takes to get an Image of the Week.
