Two days after competing in Lake Race in Central Missouri, it was easy to tell that Mike Wright was still giddy from the competition on Saturday. That’s because he and Nick Smith, alongside fellow Class 5 competitors Bill Allen and Andrei Allen, put on a spectacular tight-racing show for everyone watching. It didn’t matter that Wright’s WIA Marine Insurance 29-foot Warlock finished third ahead of the fourth-place father-and-son team in the 30-foot Phantom.

What mattered is that Wright and Smith had fun, and that’s exactly what happened in front of Beavers At The Dam on Lake of the Ozarks.
“We had an absolute blast,” said Wright who throttled the boat while Smith drove it. “It’s always fun to run against Billy and Andrei. They are stand-up guys and excellent racers. We’re happy that we came out ahead of them this year, but the best part was battling them deck-to-deck through the turns. It’s hard to explain how much fun that is.”
The elder Allen agreed with Wright—and he got to race with his son twice as the Team Allen Lawn Care and Landscaping outfit recently added an outboard-powered 32-foot Doug Wright Designs canopied raceboat that made its debut at the event and finished third in the Super Stock class.
“We always enjoy Lake Race,” Allen said. “We didn’t have the best results but we had a great time once again.”
