While yesterday’s releases of Mercury Racing’s two new QC4v engines and one all-aluminum V-16 platform from Sixteen Power grabbed most of our attention, there were a couple of other noteworthy engine debuts from Ilmor Marine and Mercury Marine.

Based on the same 7.4-liter LS platform (454-cubic-inch) as Ilmor’s MV-570 engine, the new MV8 7.4L OPS recreational stern-drive engine makes 483 hp. It is paired with the company’s hydraulic One Drive and, according to a press release from the Plymouth, Mich., engine company, it “fills the power void currently experienced in the gasoline stern-drive segment between recreational duty 430 hp and high-performance 520 hp.”

The catalyzed, Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board emissions-compliant MV8 7.4L engine’s Ilmor-designed internal components include forged crank, rods and pistons. The engine comes standard with closed cooling and electric throttle, and features a performance tuned cast aluminum intake and easily accessible service points. It comes standard with a five-year/500-hour factory-backed limited warranty.

As for Mercury Marine, the Fond du Lac, Wis., marine engine and accessories company introduced a Mercury Diesel 6.7L mid-range engine family. The electronic common-rail engines will be offered in 480-, 500- and 550-hp versions and will be available as inboards or packaged with the Mercury Zeus pod-drive. The new engines is compatible with Mercury’s full suite of SmartCraft controls and electronics, including optional joystick piloting for inboards and joystick piloting for pods (Zeus).
