Although Southern California performance boaters Kenny and Montana Gonzales had planned to purchase Crypto, an SV 43 from Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats in Bristol, R.I., through Seabound Yachts—as well as the customized SportChassis Freightliner that hauls the impressive, canopied V-bottom—the couple withdrew from the deal earlier this year and shortly thereafter landed their next boat, which they are excited to debut this week in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

According to Kenny Gonzales, he’s been hanging out at his Lake Havasu home for the last couple of weeks getting RedRum—his 2018 43-foot MTI catamaran powered by Mercury Racing dual-fuel turbocharged 1350/1100 engines—ready for this week’s Super Cat Fest West and next week’s Desert Storm Poker Run. And, thanks to the teams at Barrett Custom Marine in Lake Havasu City and MTI in Wentzville, Mo., he said the boat is dialed in perfectly.
“The boat runs so well—she’s literally perfect,” Gonzales expressed with a smile. “We’ve been messing with props to suit my driving style and all I can say is that this boat is fun to drive. And it’s absolutely gorgeous.
“After I pulled out of the Outerlimits deal, I wasn’t sure what direction I was headed,” he added. “I checked out a couple of Skaters that were for sale and then my friend, Shawn Moe, turned me on to John Caldwell’s previous 43 MTI with the dual-fuel engines. The boat was priced right so we pulled the trigger and we couldn’t be happier. I’d ridden in a few MTIs before so I knew what to expect from a performance standpoint. What I didn’t expect was the treatment I’ve received from Randy Scism and everyone at MTI since I bought the boat.”

Gonzales explained that the boat needed some repairs and that Barrett Custom Marine and MTI were on it immediately with a resolution—free of charge.
“I’ve been a part of this powerboat stuff for 22-plus years and I’ve heard it all,” Gonzales said with a laugh. “But I recently heard something I’ve never heard before, and that’s ‘We’ll take care of it Kenny.’ And they did—in a way that I would describe as white-glove, top-flight service. With that type of treatment, plus the build quality and overall performance of this boat, I am thoroughly convinced that I’ll never own another boat built by any other manufacturer. Don’t get me wrong, every DCB I’ve owned was a great boat, but Randy and his team truly are top notch.”
Gonzales is hoping to take the boat, which he plans to use regularly on Lake Havasu and as well as on Lake Eufaula in Oklahoma, the state where he grew up before moving to Southern California at age 10 with his mother, to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri in August and to the Lake Powell Challenge in Northern Arizona in September.
“We’re excited to have Kenny and Montana join the MTI family,” said Scism, who founded MTI in 1999. “We met him and his wife at Lake Powell a couple of years ago; they’re great people. I have feeling they’re going to love the boat and that it is going to open up a whole new world of boating experiences for them.”
