Gallery of the Week: Fall Color at Lake Hopatcong

As reported on speedonthewater.com earlier today, 10 teams from Miss GEICO to Saris Racing Engines claimed Offshore Powerboat Association National Championship titles on Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey yesterday. And veteran high-performance powerboating photographer Tim Sharkey was on hand to chronicle the penultimate event—the organization’s World Championships are still scheduled for Englewood Beach, Fla., in November—of the 2017 OPA season.

As a flat-water race, the Lake Hopatcong contest was predictably short on high-flying action. (Close competition, on the other hand, reportedly was the order of the day in several classes.) But thanks to a dose of early Northeastern fall color, it did produce some of the prettiest images we’ve seen this year from the OPA circuit. And given that the organization held a race in Bimini, Bahamas, earlier this year, that’s saying something.
