Faces Of The Key West Worlds

With speedonthewatwer.com chief photographer Pete Boden assigned to handle all the racing action, contributing photographer/writer Cole McGowan focused his camera on the racers themselves during the 2021 American Powerboat Association/Union Internationale Motonautique Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla. And McGowan did his usual bang-up job.

A multi-time world champion throttleman, John Tomlinson flashed his favorite sign during the 2021 APBA/UIM Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla., earlier this month. Photos by Cole McGowan copyright speedonthewater.com.

Covering three days of offshore racing and the Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run is a big job, especially for our photographers. Boden, for example, shot the raceboat parade on Duval Street. The next day, he was off to shoot the first practice and testing session. On Wednesday, he captured the first race of the week.

An hour after finishing up with Friday’s race, Boden was in the air shooting a fine group of high-performance center consoles, catamarans and V-bottom sportboats for our Speed On The Water 2021 Year In Review collectible print magazine, which will be published in early January. Come Sunday, he was back to capturing offshore raceboats in action.

Having battled weather more than once in Key West, we set up two shoot days this time around instead of one for our Year In Review issue. So on Saturday afternoon, speedonthewater.com contributing photographer Jeff Helmkamp picked up where Boden left off.

And then there was McGowan, who managed to find time to help us out between his duties for the Huski Chocolate/Huski Wear team and Powerboat P1/P1 Offshore. McGowan has a knack for capturing images of people and, as he all year for our “Faces” photo galleries, he came through in Key West.

We think you’ll agree.
