Although he does most of his boating in Canada where he’s from, Cole Leibel has been going to Key West, Fla., for the offshore racing world championships since he was a young boy. That’s because his uncle—Lorne Leibel of Toronto—is a former world champion offshore racer who campaigned several notable boats in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.

This week is no different as Cole is headed down to Key West to watch the races with his father, Corey, and a dozen other friends and family members on Corey’s 56-footer from Magnum Marine, which is powered by twin 1,500-hp Cat engines. Cole, who has owned Wild Cat, a 2003 Douglas Marine-built 368 Skater catamaran for four years, said his father enjoys go-fast boats but not the mechanical headaches that are often associated with them.
